Crusader and the team of skippers and crew have been tagging and releasing Giant Atlantic Blue Fin Tuna for the past three seasons. Not only have they been a leading choice among Plymouth charter boats in this fishery, but their work has also contributed to the management and stock recovery of this iconic species through careful recovery protocols and tagging. We hold tags for NOAA and will continue to tag these fish for future research and stock management.
Our Plymouth fishing charters offer tuna fishing trips that last 10 hours, and we provide all the necessary kit free of charge. Full tuition is given, and fishing is conducted from our custom-built fighting chair or stand-up positions.
In 2024, we will utilize a range of techniques, including lures and baits, to target these impressive tuna. We will cater to all experience levels with a wide variety of kit and approaches during our Plymouth deep sea fishing trips.

Blue sharks are the predominant species of sharks in our local waters, making them a popular target for those seeking Plymouth fishing charters. Additionally, we also catch and release Porbeagle sharks and Thresher sharks during our trips. Crusader operates a 100% catch and release policy, ensuring that sharks are only removed from the water when absolutely necessary. All sharks are recorded for the Pat Smith Database and tagged for NOAA to support ongoing research.
Every year, hundreds of blue sharks are brought to the side of Crusader, and we collate data to share with research organizations to better understand their migration patterns and growth rates. This information helps in planning for their protection and stock management, which is vital for sustainable Plymouth deep sea fishing. Among these blue sharks, Porbeagle sharks are regularly seen, and the occasional Thresher shark makes an appearance. In 2025, the Marine Management Organisation and DEFRA have opened the second recreational fishery for Bluefin tuna, which is expected to attract enthusiasts using Plymouth charter boats. The Recreational Bluefin Tuna Fishery will not require training, though demand for permits is expected to exceed supply. The consultation indicated that proven, demonstrable experience would be a key factor. While training is not mandatory, it should be viewed as a beneficial step, particularly as insurers may eventually require it. These majestic fish demand immense respect and should not be targeted lightly; thus, we offer training sessions to enhance your confidence and skills, while prioritizing safety.
Special care must be taken to ensure maximum survival rates post-capture. CHART skippers have shown that, with the right equipment and procedures, these tuna can be caught, tagged, revived, and released safely, minimizing mortality rates. If the recreational fishery fails to maintain low mortality rates, the quota will limit the number of permits issued.
The team at Crusader Charters includes skippers and crew with three years of CHART experience, alongside a Sport England qualified Angling Coach and a QTS qualified teacher. We have developed a bespoke training program designed to assist you in your quest to successfully and legally fish for Bluefin Tuna in UK waters, particularly through our Plymouth fishing charters.
The course features hands-on practice with rigging rods and reels, tackle requirements, knot tying, crew deployment, and specialized demonstrations of harness setups and boat handling, ideal for those interested in Plymouth deep sea fishing.
